Role of C.N.A: education requirements, nursing team, job functions, scope
of practice, professionalism, characteristics of a good C.N.A., personal health/hygiene,
handling stress
Human Development: life stages from infancy to older adulthood, Maslow's
Hierarchy of Needs, putting self in clients' place
Infection Control: types of microbes, our immune system, chain of infection,
medical asepsis, hand washing (including "glow lotion test"), standard precautions,
isolation precautions (including gloving & gowning).

- Legal & Ethical Issues: clients rights, civil laws (neglect, malpractice),
abuse (kinds), prevention, reporting
- Communication: verbal & non-verbal, how to listen, tactics that enhance communication,
telephone skills, conflict resolution, documentation,
observations, difference between
objective & subjective, role-playing scenarios

Wednesday |
- Body Mechanics: alignment "rules", lifting & back safety, ergonomic facts,
practice, practice, practice
- Emergencies: fire (R.A.C.E), evacuation, chemical injuries, accidents, disaster
preparedness, profuse bleeding, choking, C.P.R. facts (not official teaching)
- Client Safety & Restraints: accidents risk factors, prevention, reporting
accidents, restraints definition, legality, complications, alternatives to restraints,
charting regarding restraints

Thursday |
- Positioning, Lifting, & Transferring: positioning in bed, basic positions,
logrolling, use of gait belt, how to pivot, basic transfers (bed to w/c, bed to
standing, etc), use of a mechanical lift, how to ambulate, dangling (practice)
- Affects of Immobility: how bed rest affects all body systems, what a
CNA
can do to prevent complications
- Rehabilitation: definition, use of assistive devices, emotional component

- Vital Signs: temp, pulse, respirations, BP, height & weight, reasons for
abnormals (practice, practice) Nutrition/Feeding: nutrients, food pyramid, label
reading, meal preparation, I & O, enteral nutrition, fluid balance, different diets,
how to feed, mechanics of swallowing
- Medical Terminology: root words, prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, terms

- Bed making: infection control, unoccupied, occupied, square corners, practice
- Elimination: equipment used, promotion of normal elimination, how CNAs can
encourage this, obtaining urine & stool specimens, urinary catheters, incontinence,
suppositories & enemas, documentation of elimination
- Personal Care, part 1: importance
of routine, respect & dignity, oral/mouth care, how oral care prevents pneumonia,
shampoo

- Personal Care, part 2: bed bath, partial bath, perineal cares, grooming,
dressing
- Pain & Comfort: basics of pain physiology, analgesia, anesthesia, kinds of
pain, measurement of pain, what a CNA can do to give comfort, documenting pain

- Death & Dying: terminal care, needs of the dying client, stages of dying,
dealing with family, cultural differences, own experiences, post- mortem care
- Body Systems, part 1: basic body structure, parts of and function of
integumentary
system, musculoskeletal system, respiratory system, cardio-vascular system, nervous
system

- Body Systems, part 2: sensory system, endocrine system, urinary system, reproductive
system, digestive system
- Chronic Conditions: highlights only --COPD, diabetes, arthritis, mental illness,

- Alzheimer's/Dementia: causes, stages, symptoms, needs, how to approach, view
movie

|
Week Three
|
- Our third week will consist of spending 40 hours at a nursing
home facility giving hands on care to patients under the
direction of an instructor.
